I Have a Girlfriend and Her Name is Insomnia

by chris thompson on January 6, 2010

She has been visiting me…AND spending the night…more frequently over the past few months.  I’m going on my 3rd day with no sleep and let me fill you in on a secret…it sucks.

I have no clue what has brought this on but it’s unbelievable.  I’m freaking…FREAKING….exhausted.  I’m staying home from work today because I don’t trust myself on the roads.

I’ll go to bed about 10 and sleep for about 10 minutes and then BOOM!  My nerve endings begin to shoot out of my legs, my brain opens every cylinder of it’s V8, and my eyes are open like…crap…too tired for a simile.  I start thinking and worrying about TONS of stuff.  Normally my lack of responsibility and maturity provides me many nights of sound slumber…but something is SO off.

I’m grumpy, smelly, messy, grumpy, tired, and freaking grumpy.

I don’t know what’s going on but my brain just begins to race and my only relief is to work.  I’ll park myself in front of my computer and work like it’s fun.  Of course I know I’m not supposed to do that. I’m going to do my best to take the night off and just vegetate.  It’s interesting though, as I think about it I realize that the past few months I have gone through times of extreme fatigue and times of extreme energy.  There are times where you can’t drag me out of bed and then there are times where I can work hours and hours on end.

Tonight I’m planning a good dinner to go along with the National Championship and then I’ll give it a go again.

I might even go with the Tylenol PM but man, those things give me funky dreams.

My insomnia rant is over.  Thompson out.  (i wish)

Hey, Chris, Helga here…I deal with the very same issues, we all do in my family, my sisters, my mom. But there are many thing that can help.
I suggest you only take one Tylenol PM, that helps cut down on the weird dreams. Take it an hour before normal bedtime.
Melatonin is helpful, really, it is at Whole Foods.
Regular exercise (I know, easy to suggest, harder to implement) help re-set the body’s time clock, releasing it’s own natural chemicals within to trigger normal bedtimes.
A cooler house in the evening also triggers your body to know it is getting time for bed. Lower body temps triggers the body’s natural secretion of melatonin.
Keep us informed! Helga (“Dee”)
Better eating habits, less food in the evening helps.
